10 Easy Ways to Eat Healthier -- Every Day

You may have heard many of these ideas before -- including from yours truly -- but that's OK because they're all really good and useful suggestions.
Fruits and veggies make great snacks

From a reliable, favorite source of mine (Eating Well Magazine), check out their "10 Tips the Help You Eat Well for Life."
Some of them are:
1. Load up on fruits and vegetables (you know that, right?)
2. Eat meat sparingly, and stick to leaner cuts (if you do eat meat)
3. Stay with "good fats" (such as vegetable oils, especially olive oil)
4. Add more seafood to your diet
5. Be a savvy shopper (you'll have to go to the Eating Well article for this one.

Eat right to avoid the "Big C"

Tips for a Cancer Free Diet!
by Leroy Templeton

We all know about the cancer dangers inherent in smoking and other environmental carcinogens, but diet is less often discussed as a cause of cancer. And yet, as recent studies show, diet plays a significant role in approximately 30% of cancer diagnoses. That’s right, almost one third of those diagnosed with cancer can blame, in part at least, what they eat. This is a scary thought, no doubt, but there is some good to it. Since diet is something you can control, you can make your diet fight cancer, rather than promote it, by keeping a few things in mind:
·         Eat Natural Foods
-          As many of the preservatives and additives in synthetic foods contain carcinogens, it is important to try to eat as natural as possible
·         Avoid Red Meats
-          Red meats have been shown to correlate highly with colon cancer in a number of studies. Its best to substitute leaner poultry and fish whenever possible
·         Monitor Sugar Intake
-          Too much sugar upsets the body’s natural chemicals balances and disrupts the cell division process. When this happens  you put yourself at risk for a number of cancers including pancreatic cancer and pleural mesothelioma
·         Eat More Foods with Antioxidants and Flavonoids
-          Antioxidants help flush out bacteria in the body and flavonoids help repair damaged cells in the body. These nutrients boost the immune system and foster an environment where cancerous tumors have difficulty surviving. They are found in bitter foods like coffee and dark chocolate as well as citrus fruits.

The battle against cancer is not an easy one. But take every precaution you can. Ultimately, if you keep these tips in mind when managing your diet you will be eating much healthier, lowering your chances for a number of health problems as well as lowering your chances for cancer by about 30%. Not to mention, you may even shed a few pounds too ;)

What REALLY makes us gain weight -- and how best to lose it? (Or not gain?)

Eat more yogurt!
Diets don't work. Counting calories doesn't work. Even dedicated exercise is no guarantee that you won't gain pounds every year until you're a middle-aged overweight or even obese person wondering how I got that way, and what on earth can get these pounds off?
The latest research reinforces what nutritionists have been saying for years: it's what you eat that makes all the difference. And not just HOW MUCH you eat, but what those foods actually are.
For a lengthy discussion of the most up to date research on how to avoid long-term weight creep, check out this article in the New York Times Health section.
Short version: avoid bad foods and pile on the good foods. No surprises what the bad ones are: French fries and potato chips are the main offenders in causing Americans to be fat, followed closely sugary drinks and red or processed meats.

Step away from the fried potatoes
And what are the good foods we should be chowing down at every opportunity? Again, no surprises: fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Slightly more surprising is that nuts are every bit as good for you as we've been hearing, and the big surprise? The one food most associated with people NOT gaining weight over the years is YOGURT. That's right -- eat more yogurt!
